Melting and freezing of argon in a granular packing of linear mesopore arrays

Freezing and melting of Ar condensed in a granular packing of template-grown arrays of linear mesopores (SBA-15, mean pore diameter 8 nanometer) has been studied by specific heat measurements C as a function of fractional filling of the pores. While interfacial melting leads to a single melting peak in C, homogeneous and heterogeneous freezing along with a delayering transition for partial fillings of the pores result in a complex freezing mechanism explainable only by a consideration of regular adsorption sites (in the cylindrical mesopores) and irregular adsorption sites (in niches of the rough external surfaces of the grains, and at points of mutual contact of the powder grains). The tensile pressure release upon reaching bulk liquid/vapor coexistence quantitatively accounts for an upward shift of the melting/freeezing temperature observed while overfilling the mesopores.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear as a Letter in Physical Review Letter

The self distributing virtual machine (SDVM): making computer clusters adaptive

    Get PDF
The Self Distributing Virtual Machine (SDVM) is a middleware concept to form a parallel computing machine consisting of a any set of processing units, such as functional units in a processor or FPGA, processing units in a multiprocessor chip, or computers in a computer cluster. Its structure and functionality is biologically inspired aiming towards forming a combined workforce of independent units (”sites”), each acting on the same set of simple rules. The SDVM supports growing and shrinking the cluster at runtime as well as heterogeneous clusters. It uses the work-stealing principle to dynamically distribute the workload among all sites. The SDVM’s energy management targets the health of all sites by adjusting their power states according to workload and temperature. Dynamic reassignment of the current workload facilitates a new energy policy which focuses on increasing the reliability of each site. This paper presents the structure and the functionality of the SDVM.1st IFIP International Conference on Biologically Inspired Cooperative Computing - Mechatronics and Computer ClustersRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

    Optical computing by injection-locked lasers

A programmable optical computer has remained an elusive concept. To construct a practical computing primitive equivalent to an electronic Boolean logic, one should find a nonlinear phenomenon that overcomes weaknesses present in many optical processing schemes. Ideally, the nonlinearity should provide a functionally complete set of logic operations, enable ultrafast all-optical programmability, and allow cascaded operations without a change in the operating wavelength or in the signal encoding format. Here we demonstrate a programmable logic gate using an injection-locked Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The gate program is switched between the AND and the OR operations at the rate of 1 GHz with Bit Error Ratio (BER) of 10e-6 without changes in the wavelength or in the signal encoding format. The scheme is based on nonlinearity of normalization operations, which can be used to construct any continuous complex function or operation, Boolean or otherwise.Comment: 47 pages, 7 figures in total, 2 tables.
